How many paragraphs of oratory do you need?

In the face of that young student who sleeps just three hours before working the night shift, I think about my mom, who raised my sister and me on her own while she worked and earned her degree; who once turned to food stamps but was still able to send us to the best schools in the country with the help of student loans and scholarships. Likewise, it is important for Western countries to avoid impeding Muslim citizens from practicing religion as they see fit - for instance, by dictating what clothes a Muslim woman should wear.

It is not up in heaven. But the remarks that have caused this recent firestorm weren't simply controversial. Because one of the things that we have to change in our politics is the idea that people cannot disagree without challenging each other's character and patriotism. I've seen it in Illinois, when we provided health care to more children and moved more families from welfare to work. Fear that because of modernity we will lose of control over our economic choices, our politics, and most importantly our identities - those things we most cherish about our communities, our families, our traditions, and our faith.

But what the people heard instead - people of every creed and color, from every walk of life - is that in America, our destiny is inextricably linked. All of us have a responsibility to work for the day when the mothers of Israelis and Palestinians can see their children grow up without fear; when the Holy Land of three great faiths is the place of peace that God intended it to be; when Jerusalem is a secure and lasting home for Jews and Christians and Muslims, and a place for all of the children of Abraham to mingle peacefully together as in the story of Isra, when Moses, Jesus, and Mohammed (peace be upon them) joined in prayer. This is not simply about America's interests.
